What’s new at KCI …

Serving Victims of Domestic AbuseServing Victims of Domestic Abuse

The Akron Battered Women's Shelter has served victims of domestic abuse in several different deteriorating properties.  They recently renovated a former nursing home and moved residents into it.  The new site, called the Center for Hope and Healing also houses a rape crisis center.  It has 154 beds to provide a safe place for victims of domestic violence and abuse who are trying to become independent.  However they had one big hurdle — kitchen construction wouldn’t be finished until mid-June.

That’s where Kovatch Castings came in.  Sharon McCraney who works in the Wax Department read about the need and took up a collection to help out.  We used the money and more donated by KCI to purchase food for cold sandwiches such as chicken/tuna salad, croissants, buns, roast beef, ham, turkey, peanut butter and jelly, chips, fruit, desserts and beverages. Volunteers from a different department each day made up various sandwiches and put together the rest of the food to make a nice lunch for the residents, which was delivered daily.  We were happy to help out those who have a chosen a violent-free life to get back on their feet.
