Chemical & mechanical testing

At Kovatch Castings, our highly trained metallurgical engineers and technicians are able to accurately perform both chemical and mechanical material testing. We have the capability to fulfill essential value-added material testing for our customers in the aerospace, military, medical, commercial, and other industries. All testing is performed in accordance with testing standards and customer requirements, and we have state-of- the-art equipment to perform those tests. At Kovatch Castings, products are cast, heat treated and tested with careful attention to lot integrity and traceability.

Mechanical Testing

Materials are defined and specified by their properties. It’s the material mechanical properties such as: hardness, strength, stress behavior and ductility that often defines the use of the material in a particular part and effects the design and safety of that part. Our ability to verify the mechanical properties of material used in production of your castings assures a product that performs as expected.

Kovatch Castings offers both independent and in-house mechanical testing on the wide variety of materials we pour.

The Mechanical Properties tests are performed on our in-house Tinius Olsen 12,000 lb LoCap tensile tester. This machine is durable, accurate and easy to use. The provided software was designed for use in both Quality Control and research laboratories.

From a standard test specimen that is machined in-house, the tests are performed in air atmosphere at ambient temperature. We are able to measure and provide reports on the mechanical strength and performance of material including yield and tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area.

Chemical Testing by Spectrometer

Knowing the exact metal and chemical content of a casting assures that you receive the part in the alloy specification required.

We perform Chemical Testing on the Q4 Tasman 130, Spark optical omission spectrometer ( S-OES) by BRUKER.

This state-of the-art CCD-based bench top spark spectrometer identifies alloys containing six base metals: Fe, Al, Co, Ti, Cu, Ni and 35 elements including nitrogen.

Kovatch has also invested in the latest hand-held equipment for chemical analysis during the production process. The Tasman 130 companion piece, the XRF portable BRUKER S1 Turbo SD, hand-held model can analyze every poured tree and every bar of alloy to insure chemical conformity. Metal testing during production used to consume time and resources, but now the same function can be actually performed in the foundry without having to cut metal samples for laboratory analysis. This capability is not often found in other foundries.

The ability to accurately measure the mechanical properties and exact chemical composition for every metal group and alloy we pour, gives our customers the highest degree of confidence that they are getting castings made in the material composition ordered.

Such calibrated, modern equipment enables our metallurgical engineers and inspectors to use highly-effective tools that decrease throughput time and help meet delivery request dates to increase customer satisfaction.
